"2009 Brewers Speedway Reunion Album"
- In the words of Reunion Organizer Mike Wheeler -
On March 28, 2009 the long awaited Brewers Speedway Reunion took place in Wilson, NC. The event was in honor of George Brewer's contribution to flat track racing in Eastern NC, not only as a promoter and track owner, but as a fierce competitor on the track. With 130 attenders featuring some 70 riders and family members, crossing two generations of racers from 1968 – 1978, the evening was more than anyone had imagined and everything all had hoped for.
The night began with a time of fellowship and everyone quickly became reacquainted, and in about 30 minutes it was like we had just left the track the week before. Some 33 years had passed since the last race was run on the fame ¼ mile surface. Dinner was next and after a blessing of prayer over the event we all enjoyed a barbeque chicken dinner with all the trimmings prepared by Cherry's Barbecue of Wilson, NC. Everyone then were blown away by the viewing of a DVD presentation, a history in song and pictures compiled of some 225 donated memories. The men were bench racing and there were tears shed toward the end of the feature which included a memorial to the known Brewers Racing Family members who had lost their lives over the past three decades...but the night was not over.
There was a trophy competition with the top three winners taking home the prized “Brewer” in the following four classes: Fiercest Competitor; Crowd Favorite; Grand Finale; and Hall of Fame (see results inside album). Then the Promoters Choice Awards went to noteworthy racers who had influenced racing in general...all being Brewers riders or mechanics. We then participated in a “mini-roast “of George with speakers from the crowd coming up to the microphone and taking shots at the unsuspecting Brewer, and sharing stories and memories of the glory days of racing action at Brewers Speedway.
Finally it was time to honor the “Man of the Hour”, George Brewer who was presented a plaque which read "In honor and appreciation of your contribution to flat track racing in Eastern NC and for your dedication during the most popular era in motorcycle racing history. The Brewers Racing Family". For the first time in George Brewer's life, he became a “man of few words” as he addressed the crowd in humble thanks, but always taking control of the situation as he had done for years as a race track owner. Then the night finished with everyone enjoying the motorcycles, pictures, and memorabilia the attenders had brought, the highlight being the Mike Eades prepared DMR Ossa. Everyone continued like it was a family reunion (“which it was”) and traded contacts and phone numbers and the event went about 2 hours overtime which was a great testimony of how close knit the motorcycle racing community was then, and still is today. “We'll do this again in 2012”
