-"The Story of the Richmond 13 Mile National" -

by "The Man" himself

AT THE END OF 1967 WE, THE RICHMOND MOTORCYCLE CLUB OF RICHMOND VA DECIDED SINCE IT HAD BEEN THIRTEEN YEARS SINCE THE LAST NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN VA THAT WE SHOULD SPONSOR THE 13 MILE NATIONAL FLAT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP. AFTER THE USUAL AMOUNT OF TIME TO CLEAR ALL THE POLITICS WE WERE AWARDED A SANCTION FOR MAY 19,1968. WE IMMEDIATELY SET OUT WITH A PRETTY STRONG ADVERTISING PLAN AND WHEN THE TIME CAME WE DID A FANTASTIC JOB OF LOADING THE GRANDSTAND AS WELL AS FILLING THE PIT AREA WITH THE GREATEST NAMES IN THE HISTORY OF MOTORCYCLE RACING. JULES HORKY WHO WAS THE AMA REFEREE OF THE DAY CAME DOWN FROM COLUMBUS AND WAS VERY COMPLIMENTARY AS TO THE WAY THE EVENT WAS RUN. AS MATTER OF FACT HE STATED THAT IN HIS OPINION IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST. ARMED WITH THAT OPTIMISIM WE IMMEDIATELY SET OUT FOR A DATE IN 1969. CONTRACTS WERE SIGNED AND ALL WAS IN ORDER AND MONDAY THE RICHMOND NEWAPAPERS CARRIED THE STORY OF HOW THE TRACK WAS BULLDOZEDE AWAY AND ASHPHALTED. THAT ENDED THE RUN OF NATIONALS THAT WENT BACK TO THE BEGINNING OF TIME. WE HAVE HERE IN THIS ALBUM PICTURES OF EXACTLY HOW IT WENT. LOOK OVER THE LIST OF RIDERS AND YOU WON’T FIND A MORE REPRESENTATIVE ROSTER OF THE BEST EVER RUN. SAD TO SEE IT GO BUT IT WAS A HELL OF A RIDE. EDDIE
